HALKI

Situated to the south of Tilos and west of Rhodos, Halki has been inhabited since antiquity, when it must have been very prosperous, judging from the coins found by archaeologists. Its name most probably reflects the copper ore (halkos) once mined there.

The island capital and port is called variously Halki or Nimborio. Situated on the southeast coast, its two-storey houses with their tile roofs seem to climb up the sides of the hill overlooking the bay of the same name. Worth a visit is its church of Agios Nikolaos, built in 1861, whose magnificent bell tower soars above the surrounding houses. Its stone houses, built in tiers like an amphitheatre, are mute reminders of its past prosperity. Above Horio the ruined mediaeval castle occupies the site of the ancient acropolis. Within its walls is another church dedicated to St. Nicholas (Agios Nikolaos) with frescoes.

MORE INFORMATION

Cruising around the Greek Islands from Athens is one of the most popular ways to explore Greece’s stunning Aegean and Ionian seas. Here’s a brief overview:

🛳️ Departure Point

  • Most cruises start from Piraeus Port, about 10 km from central Athens and 45 minutes from the airport.

  • Some smaller or luxury cruises may depart from Lavrion Port (closer to Cape Sounion).

🌅 Typical Itineraries

  • 3–4 nights (short cruises): Commonly visit Mykonos, Santorini, Patmos, Crete, and Kusadasi (Turkey).

  • 7 nights or longer: Can include Rhodes, Paros, Milos, Naxos, Syros, and sometimes the Ionian Islands (e.g., Corfu) or Northern Aegean (e.g., Lesvos).

  • Private yacht charters offer flexible itineraries and access to smaller, less touristy islands.

🏝️ Popular Highlights

  • Santorini: Volcanic cliffs, sunsets, wineries.

  • Mykonos: Nightlife, beaches, windmills.

  • Crete: Ancient Minoan ruins (Knossos), local cuisine.

  • Rhodes: Medieval Old Town, beaches.

  • Paros & Naxos: Traditional villages, water sports.

💶 Cruise Types

  • Large cruise ships: Operated by lines like Celestyal Cruises, Norwegian, or MSC.

  • Luxury small ships: Offer a more intimate experience (Seabourn, Silversea).

  • Private yachts/catamarans: Fully customizable itineraries, often departing from Athens or Lavrion.

🌤️ Best Time to Go

  • May–October is ideal, with warm seas and reliable weather.

  • July–August is high season—expect crowds and higher prices.

  • May–June or September–October offer fewer tourists and pleasant temperatures.
