Sporades Islands Map & Brief Story

The Sporades Islands lie in the northwestern Aegean Sea, off the eastern coast of mainland Greece and northeast of Evia. The main islands of the group are Skiathos, Skopelos, Alonnisos and Skyros, surrounded by numerous smaller islands and islets.

The name Sporades comes from the Greek word meaning “scattered”, reflecting the way these islands are spread across the Aegean. The northern trio of Skiathos, Skopelos and Alonnisos form a particularly attractive area for island-hopping by yacht, with relatively short passages, sheltered bays, pine-covered landscapes and clear turquoise waters. Skyros lies farther southeast and has a distinctly different character, combining Sporades landscapes with traditions and architecture that also evoke the Cyclades.

A Short Story of the Sporades

For centuries, life in the Sporades has been closely connected with the sea. Ancient communities developed around maritime trade, fishing and agriculture, while the islands' strategic position in the Aegean also exposed them to periods of piracy and changing empires. Skopelos, known in antiquity as Peparethos, was particularly famous for its wine, which was traded throughout the ancient world.

Today, the character of the Sporades is defined by the extraordinary meeting of forest and sea. On Skiathos, pine forests descend towards famous beaches and a naturally sheltered harbour. Skopelos is known for its green hills, traditional Chora and emerald waters, while Alonnisos offers a quieter natural environment and access to the National Marine Park, an important habitat for the Mediterranean monk seal.

Skyros, the southernmost of the principal Sporades, adds another dimension to the archipelago. Its landscape changes dramatically from lush pine forests in the north to rugged, almost arid terrain in the south. The island is also known for its traditional crafts, distinctive local culture and the rare Skyrian horses that roam around Mount Kochylas.

The Sporades by Yacht

For a Greek yacht charter, the Sporades offer a relaxed route through some of the Aegean's most naturally beautiful cruising grounds. A typical itinerary can combine Skiathos, Skopelos and Alonnisos, with stops at secluded coves, beaches, small fishing villages and sheltered anchorages. The region is particularly appealing for crewed motor yachts, catamarans and sailing yachts, allowing guests to combine swimming and water sports with village visits, local dining and exploration ashore.

For a longer yacht holiday, the itinerary can be extended towards Skyros, depending on the yacht, weather conditions and cruising schedule.
